58] -- Usually, the Baltimore Ethical Society, 306 W. Franklin St., Suite 102, Baltimore 21201-4661, meets on Sundays, and generally there is a speaker and discussion from 10:30 AM to noon. On Sun., Apr. 20, the platform address is “An Enlightened Future for All, but When?” It will be delivered by Stuart Jordan, president, Institute for Science and Human Values. This country was born at the height of the Enlightenment, yet outside of educated circles we seldom hear of this great humanistic movement today. The central idea of the Enlightenment was progress, especially toward a better world for people everywhere. Dr. Jordan will discuss how well we have progressed and where we have stumbled, concluding that societal progress will continue, but only if universal education in critical thinking and civic mindedness are significantly improved.

Jordan is a retired NASA Senior Staff Scientist and holds a Ph.D. in physics and astrophysics. He has held leadership positions in three humanist organizations, and he is author of the recently published book “The Enlightenment Vision–Science, Reason, and the Promise of a Better Future” (Prometheus Books). Read more at http://ishv.net. Call 410-581-2322 or email ask@bmorethical.org.

59] -- Join the Kadampa Meditation Center for Peace and Pancakes on Sundays at 10:30 AM at KMC Maryland, 2937 North Charles St. All are invited to participate in guided meditation and chant praying for world peace. There will be a talk based on Buddhist thought followed by brunch. Call 410- 243-3837. Brunch is $5.

60] -- There is a Seder in the Streets: Jews in Solidarity with the #Not1More Deportation Hunger Strikers on Sun., Apr. 20 from 11 AM to 1 PM in Lafayette Park, across from the White House. Each day more than 1,000 people are deported from the U.S. They are torn apart from family, community and loved ones. By the end of this month, two million people will have been deported by the Obama Administration, amid Congressional inaction on Comprehensive Immigration Reform. The President can take concrete, bold and necessary actions to turn back the deportation dragnet. We must act not out of charity, not out of guilt, but from a place deep inside our hearts that tells us that this injustice is too close to home to remain silent. Use this moment to hear the stories of people fighting for their liberation today. Join the hunger strikers for a Seder in the Streets to send the message to Obama say #Not1More Deportation! 63] – At 8 PM, join the Baltimore Coalition of Reason to hear a concert by singer/songwriter Roy Zimmerman at the Baltimore Ethical Society. A social hour starts at 7PM. The “Blue Dot Tour” is ninety minutes of these songs - funny songs like “The Faucet’s on Fire!” and “I Want a Marriage Like They Had In the Bible,” heartfelt songs like “Hope, Struggle and Change” and “I Approve This Message.” The cost is from $5 to $25, and BES will accept BNotes at the door. "One is called to live nonviolently, even if the change one works for seems impossible. It may or may not be possible to turn the US around through nonviolent revolution. But one thing favors such an attempt: the total inability of violence to change anything for the better" - Daniel Berrigan
